A Beginner's Guide to Choosing a Gun Case

Gun cases are a safe way to store and transport weapons without compromising their security while still complying to legal regulations. The case is there to protect your guns from damage and make the transport much safer, simpler and easier. There are different types of cases and they all have their pros and cons, different features and designs. Choosing one is a matter of personal preference. But before you choose you should know what to look for.

Types of Gun Cases

Hard Case

If you want maximum protection for your firearm, you should invest in a hard case. It has a hard exterior that can stand up to a lot of wear and tear. It protects the gun from potential damage from outside factors like bumps, drops and the elements. On the inside, these cases have soft padding often made of foam. The padding keeps the gun in place and protects it from impact.

There are cases with different foam densities. If the foam is not thick enough, you’ll even feel the gun shifting and moving when you carry it around. If it’s thick enough you won’t feel it move. Some manufacturers even offer a custom-made option where they tailor the case and the foam to your gun. Always buy a gun case from a reliable supplier, someone who’s been in the business long and is working with high-quality materials.

Soft Case

These types of cases are very versatile. They can be made of different materials such as leather, neoprene and nylon. All of them are durable fabrics that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. However, because they’re soft, they won’t provide as much protection as a hard case. On the other hand, these cases are lightweight, easy to handle and quiet.

They're often waterproof because there are people hunting near waters and there’s a risk of the gun getting soaked. Some of them can even float. Soft cases can also be used as travel cases. They also come in camouflage and are less expensive than hard cases.

Gun Sock

Gun socks are made of simple, durable, stretch fabrics like polyester or acrylic or soft pile materials. They're very lightweight and provide protection against dust, moisture and dirt. They’re not meant to be used on their own. You can use them as an additional, second case for extra protection.

What to Consider when Buying

Materials

Hard cases can be made of different materials. Each of them has different properties and will determine the case’s strength, durability and weight. Aluminium is a very common material because it’s very tough. Aluminium can withstand a lot of damage without compromising the gun’s safety. Plus, it’s lightweight, which is a great advantage. Aluminium is also used as a strengthener when the main material is some other metal.

Woo is a common material for hard cases because it has a timeless look and many good characteristics. To get that classic and classy look, manufacturers combine it with leather or tweed. Its only disadvantage is the weight. Wood can be very heavy and uncomfortable to carry around on your hunting trips.

You can also find cases made of composite materials such as fibre-reinforced compounds and plastic. They're materials that are both lightweight and durable. They can range in price and have different features. These cases often have a ribbed pattern that is an extra layer of protection from bumps and provide more structural integrity to the case.

Waterproof

A waterproof hard case has advantages and disadvantages. You should definitely get a waterproof case if you intend to be outside, exposed to the elements. Keeping your firearm dry is crucial for its functionality. If moisture gets inside of it, it can cause great damage and make the weapon useless. In case the weapon gets wet while you use it, wipe it off completely before storing it inside the case because the case won’t let the moisture out.

Size

When you buy a gun case, it’s crucial to get the right size. Is it just the gun? Do you have a scope as well? Cases come in many sizes and some of them can hold more than one weapon. A single gun case will store one rifle or shotgun. It's more lightweight and more compact and you can make it a custom fit for your firearm.

The two-gun case has more space. It's made for two weapons and their accessories like optics. There are case models that have wheels. This is a very convenient feature if you’re traveling on foot on rougher terrain. It can take the strain of your neck, back and shoulders.

Portability

Depending on where you’re hunting, you might need to take the case with you long distance. If you travel a lot, it’s best to buy a case for guns that has wheels and handles. This way you can easily roll no matter the terrain. If you’re looking for a case with handles or straps, make sure they’re well-padded so you don’t get bruises and skin irritation.

Locks & Safety

A lockable case is something you should go for. You can easily manage who handles your firearm if it has a lock. This is a great way to protect it from curious young ones at home. With a built-in key lock or the option to padlock through built-in holes, you should be able to securely and quickly secure it. Some even have more than one lock which is also a good idea.
